Nostalgia and “The Dairy Restaurant” A Conversation with Ben Katchor

Program Description

Cartoonist Ben Katchor writes about under-told aspects of urban life in his lusciously illustrated “The Dairy Restaurant,” where he traces the phenomenon of dairy restaurants in Jewish culture. Throughout much of the world, these venues provided Jews observant of the kosher laws with a sanctioned space to enjoy an inexpensive meal; in recent times, icons such as B&H Dairy still introduce others to the gustatory delights of blintzes, borscht and other staples of Ashkenazy cuisines. In conversation with CHNY board member James Malin, Katchor reflected on the important place of these restaurants in the lives of 20th century New Yorkers and mused poignantly on their declining numbers.
