A Zoom presentation

Chocolate has had a profound impact on culture and the human experience. Starting with its origins in Mesoamerica, where chocolate was consumed as a bitter drink, to its transformation into the sweet, creamy, and rich treat we know today, this program delves into the evolution of chocolate through the lens of museum collections. By examining historical artifacts and artworks, we trace how the cacao pod has influenced societies, economies, and traditions across the globe. This journey highlights the versatile nature of chocolate and its enduring significance in our lives.

Margaret E. Connors McQuade is Director of Collections at the Museum of the City of New York.
